Do you mean a record turntable, that you plug into a hi-fi system?

Do you need it to play really old 78’s, or just 33rpm LPs and 45rpm singles?

‘Best for least’ questions are impossible to answer completely.

A turntable by itself is useless. If by "record player" you mean a system complete with speakers and amplifier, that’s not going to be anywhere close to audiophile quality, hence not "best".

If your friend (the giftee) has an audio system already, you would need to know if it has a phono input (preamplified). Phono cartridge outputs are very low level and won’t work with the usual auxiliary inputs found on most stereo or surround sound receiver/amplifiers. Some newer turntables have pre-amps built in.

Another alternative is a turntable with digital converter built in and USB output.

Your friend can use this to listen to old records through his/her computer and/or convert the old collection to mp3 or other digital format.

That’s what I’ve been doing bit by bit over the last couple years: Converting the crates of LP’s in the closet into something I can play regularly (as well as the boxes of live Dead tapes…….)
