how to change the tone arm on a technics sl 1200/1210 turntable part 2

February 28th, 2010 by admin

This is a video showing you how you can change your tone arm on a technics SL 1200/1210 turntable.

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR MIXER FROM THE MAINS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY SIRVICING OR REPIRES.

INFORMATION.

Remember to set the anti-skating to 0 before removing the tone arm or it will not work correctly when you replace the tone arm.

When de-soldering and re-soldering the wires for the tone try to use lead solder as the solder originally used on the circuit board 90% of the time is leaded solder.

Dont forget to make note of the order the wires went in.

Make sure you store all the crews in a safe place and dont loose them.

if you would like more information on removing the screws from the bottom the link below takes you to another video were i go into more detail.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxZxJsuW-dY&tmf=18
the part your interested in is about 2:55.

WARNINGS.

Do not over tighten the 2 screws holding the tone arm to the rest of the assembly the screws in older models are made of aluminum, even the modern brass screws can cross thread easily.

Never turn the turntable upside down without any type of cushion under underneath it you could damage the tone arm, and be careful if youre using the turntable dust cover to support the turntable whilst its upside down the plastic they are made from is very brittle.

Be careful not to break any of the thin wires from the tone arm as they are a very delicate.

    hi there, sorry for …
hi there, sorry for taking so long to reply, the tone-arm lift lever, well its not vital i don’t remember the last time i actually used mine to be honest you just kind of get used to lifting it buy the handle on the cartridge but its still nice to have even if you don’t use it much. but your turntable will work fine without it, some turntables dont have one. a couple of people have asked me to do a video on how to replace it so first chance i get ill do a video.

    hope this helped.

    nice one!!!

    Great !
    A good Idea …

    Great !
A good Idea would be to solder a thin wire to the wiring of the tone-arm to replace and use it as a guide for the new wirings.

When I did this I used a toilet paper roll in the center of to stabilise the turntable .
You can then work on a table.

Also the soldering part in the tutorial is a bit light IMO.
    My Advices
    Don’t overheat while soldering.
    Use decent solder.
Clean connections by removing old solder.
Beware the soldering part is not that easy for noobs.

    A seller on eBay …
A seller on eBay sent me a table that has the tone arm lever missing. As a DJ is this part really important? Or do most people just move the tone arm by the cartridge and other places? He sent me the lever in the mail, but i have no idea how to put it in the hole cos it wont fit.

nice one, so much easyer, i wish i watched this yesterday when my 1200 was in pieces all over the kitchen table. also that one screw next to the pitch that has the earth cable, is there anyway to remove that screw because i used a electric screw driver and the head of the screw snapped right off.
