November 12th, 2009 by admin
A good quality demonstration of my Rega P5 turntable. Music recorded in an audio editor, then imported into iMovie at 160kbps VBR.

Also, Merton, I …
Also, Merton, I think that part of Rega’s philosophy especially with turntables, has always been “tried and tested” is best. Other manufacturers would charge far more than Rega for similar sound quality. I think that is is borne out, even in a lowly P1, which hi fi hacks have rated as better-sounding than a similarly priced offering from Pro-ject.

Time was when DD …
Time was when DD decks were laughed out of court. I never claimed that money went on R&D. That is not an RB300 btw it is an RB700. Nowadays the RB301 replaces the 300. It has the 3 point fixing into the plinth, same as the 700. I merely said good quality components cost. So does labour and I don’t mind that. Rega’s Apheta cartridge (not seen here) uses coils finer than a human hair. Know what I mean? I’d like to put your claims to Rega, and other manufacturers.

What expensive …
What expensive parts? The truth is no serious R&D has been done by cottage industry manufacturers like Rega for over 30 yrs! The casting for the RB300 tonearm was was done in the 80’s! Like the British bike industry, British turntable manufacturers have rested on their laurels and have churned out the same over priced product for years on end! Proper R&D into a descent DD deck would have crippled companies like Rega. You are paying for high labour cost not the quality of the product!

hey thanks for the advice…if i manage to get enough money i’ll buy the P2

I have never heard …
I have never heard of the tt42 but read reviews of both of these on those sites where customers review products. The P1 came off best – the tt42 was totally annihilated! Mainly very flimsy construction, no bass, and no way of upgrading the cartridge. The problems the owner had with the P1 were mainly to do with cartridge tracking. Mind you, he was using some cartridges. Stick to the built in one or upgrade to a Rega Bias or Goldring 1042. Better is to save for a P2, a well-respected TT.

last question… …
last question…rega p1 or marrantz tt42?
and what does 33 1/3 rpm mean…i know that 33 is the speed but what is the 1/3 for?

You can connect to …
You can connect to a computer via a phono stage. These can be bought cheaply, for about £50 for one from Cambridge Audio. The main criticism of the P1 has always been that it costs not much less than the P2. But you must but a cartridge separately for the P2 which is extra. The 2 has a much better tonearm, capable of accepting better cartridges. Also its construction is more solid and has a more powerful motor. The P1 is still excellent sound per pound though.

thanks for the reply…by the way…when i buy it…can i connect it to a computer?…if i don’t have an amp and speakers…i’m trying to earn money…i’m a fresh student so i don have a big income…also can you tell me what is the difference between P1 and P2?…thanks a lot
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
There are no volume …
There are no volume controls, or bass/treble because this, like the P1 has no amp or speakers built in. The P1 is a great starter deck, as it sounds good, is easy to set up and comes with a basic cartridge/stylus to get you going. The tonearm can cope with cartridge upgrades, to further improve sound. Magazine reviews for the P1 are great, by the way.

Hiya,
I’m using …
Hiya,
I’m using a Rega R200 tonearm on my Roksan Xerxes turntable. The R200 is an ”S” shaped tonearm from the 80s. Then later both the RB250/300 replaced it.
The R200 was built in Japan to Rega specs.
I love the sound what my R200 produces, very musical and punchy.
I use to have both the RB250/300 in the past, but I prefer what the R200 does.
Cheers
Shane
P.S I like your P5 turntable. Don’t listen to the people that leave silly comments.

Do you mean RB250 …
Do you mean RB250 or RB251, rather than R200, Olanzip?

The “arse” as you …
The “arse” as you elegantly put it is a compromise, so that more expensive/audiophile components can be used elsewhere, and is pretty standard. You’ll find that most DD turntables (eg Technics) have to be souped up, probably with Rega/SME arms to end up sounding anything like as good. The power supply optional upgrade for the P5 beefs the sound up further and adds electronic speed change. It’s only 1 belt, it’s a high quality piece of wood, and it’s EASY, by the way, other YT people!
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
What a load of arse …
What a load of arse! Do yourself a favour and buy a direct drive deck with speed change. Why the would you want to mess around with belts and pulleys glued into a piece of wood?

I managed to buy a …
I managed to buy a Roksan Xerxes Turntable with, XPS7 PSU, Rega R200 tonearm and A&R cartridge. The Rega R200 has a 22k Gold plated tube and weight. I don’t know why? Maybe the body was upgraded.
Anyway, I’m in no need for a P7.
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
What cartridge are …
What cartridge are you planning on getting? I think the P7 can handle some really top notch MC’s. Hi Fi Choice magazine tried it with one of the Van den Hul’s and the result was magic! But you’d need a good phono stage too.
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
You sure like your …
You sure like your Rega P5. I’m thinking about getting the P7, I want to get a new turntable to better my old Thorens TD160B MK2. Or in other words, put it to shame.

Yep Rega 5…pure …
Yep Rega 5…pure class. I will be getting back into vinyl in a big way. I will be getting a P3-24 which is about the max I can afford at the moment. I always loved rega and just wouldnt feel happy unless I had a 300 or 301 arm.
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
yeah, the only guy …
yeah, the only guy with any posting of the p-7 (like mine) said that the phono stage I am using, marantz is crippling my sound, but his reccomendations are very expensive comp. to a psu- its worth it as the on board power sup.transformers or whatever it is, are not noisy per se but the removal to outboard will make thier distorting effects obvious, it’ll give you more air brigher sound , like a veil lifted from the speakers-leaning to too bright, but with better bass to match.
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
I wasn’t aware that …
I wasn’t aware that any Pro-ject TT’s came with a Rega arm. I used to have a P3-2000 which sounded lovely, but the P5 is so much more refined and detailed, with bags more body. It can be a bit uninvolving though, and I would expect the PSU to improve this aspect of the sound. Maybe I will do that someday, but I’d recommend a basic P5 to anyone who hasn’t got an SME Model 10A !!!!
November 12th, 2009 1:13 am
the jump in sound …
the jump in sound qual when I traded my p-5 for my p-7 was staggering, I later found out 90% of this was the psu upgrade (rega power supply upgrade unit)
I heard a p-5 with it, and i missed the damping of my p-7 ceramic platter- the sound was as good save for mild boom and reverb, then only at near-feedback levels- i coulda saved a ton and been as happy! If you dont have it your table sounds worse than a pro-ject debut 3 which has a rega arm, with it, I havent heard better for less $ than a car
