My Sony record turntable’s stylis arm is dragging across the record. Anybody know why?

Could be a few issues. Things to check, make sure turntable is lever, specifically the plater. Make sure the stylus did not come off the cantilever. Check the stylus force with a stylus force guage, If you dont have one here is the procedure. First turn the counter weight dial to zero, then turning or sliding the counter weight itself until the arm floats level with the plater. Then turn the counter dial to the desired tracking force, I have found that 1.8 to 1.85 grams works perfect for almost all cartridges. Then lastly the anit skating, which is a dial or weight that counter acts the centrifical force of the cartridge wanting to move inward. This counter acts this force and forces it back out. Some say to adjust that anti skating to the same as the tracking force. There are a number of better ways to set anti skating. Its designed to make sure of even presure on both sides of the record service. With out measuring tools to set this, if you have a glass plater, or record with no groves on one side. put that on and adjust the anti skating till the tonearm moves just ever so slightly inward. Then your done any other questions feel free to ask

adjust the wight of the tone arm following specs, make sure the turntable is flat and level(use a home depot level to do this),on older machines there is an adjuster for lateral tracking force(towards center from the the edge),also needle might be worn out,s/b changed twice a year if you play recs every day
