How do I fix an old Westinghouse Solid State Record Player?
February 18th, 2010 by adminI have an old record player that is varying in speed. I cannot get the platten off to see what is the problem inside and the two screws that are on the bottom do nothing to allow me to get into the unit. The platten must come off some way but I don’t want to force it. Once in I think I can find and fix the problem.

There’s a C-Clamp holding it in place Look where you see the chrome or silver spindle in the middle.the C-clamp should be at the bottom of the spindle on top of the platter You should be able to remove this with a flat tipped screwdriver stick the screwdriver in the C-clamps outer slot & pry it away from the spindle.

It is called a snap ring or retainer ring, not a c clamp. C clamp has a screw you turn to tighten. Since this is an old Westinghouse I am guesseing that it is idler wheel drive, not belt or direct. The most likely cause for varying speed is a flat spot on the idler wheel or worn out wheel.
