Don´t need an iPod! Here´s my 1957 Dual 1004 D record player
December 18th, 2009 by admin
Here´s the most recent addition to my collection of fifties´ stuff: A Dual 1004 D automatic record player, produced in 1957 – and it´s still running! The song is “Wenn” by the James Brothers (Peter Kraus and Joerg Maria Berg), a german version of “When” which was originally performed by the Kalin Twins. Both versions of this song were released in 1958. If you don´t like the music or the feeling of watching a 50 year old machine: Be sure, there won´t be happening ANYTHING of your interest after the 1st fifteen seconds.
Whatever – I like this kind of keeping ancient atmosphere alive.
EDIT: Really didn´t know that 78MAN released a similar vid about a week before. See his Dansette playing the original version of this song by the Kalin Twins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZBtkiwpelI
Duration : 0:2:58

I already do. In …
I already do. In fact, the last new electronic device I have bought is a Wii, and that was 2 years ago. My telly is from 1980, my stereo is from 1951, soon my car will be from 1958 or 1959 (I plan to buy an Edsel), and all of my music is ’40s through ’80s.

No kidding! We live …
No kidding! We live in the era of fads, corporate policing, and planned obsolescence. It all sounds illegal and unfair, but now it’s practically illegal not to do those things
If anyone wants to boycott the modern world, just buy everything at thrift stores. This plan empties corporate pockets by lack of demand and all proceeds go to charity! Did I mention it’s 100% legal?

Old equipment is so …
Old equipment is so excellent. It is all so reliable. My ‘51 Westinghouse console (just found out the year, btw) works like a charm. It honestly works like brand new, and it only took the replacement of a missing tube. My crappy 1988 Samsung telly, on the other hand, worked like crap. It eventually became so unbearable that I trashed it in favour of an older telly.
Companies should go back with their tech. They should build equally reliable and fine equipment, like in the ’50s.

Vinyl will always …
Vinyl will always be more respected than mp3. Long live Vinyl! You probably won’t see any working iPods or mp3 players in 50 years time. But I think you should find a 45 rpm spindle adapter to center those records better as the speed sounded a little unstable.

I listen to KISS, …
I listen to KISS, Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue, and Quiet Riot on my vintage ’40s console radio/phono. Surprisingly, the phono works perfectly (it was never bound, nor were the 2 needles [one for 78s, one for 45s and 33s] damaged), and it contains the original oil capacitors. I use it every day, and I’m never going to buy an iPod. Digital music and transistors can burn in hell.
