I have an old record player, but when i plug it in the turntable doesn’t spin. How do I get it to work?

February 21st, 2010 by admin

The record player is an old Bush ‘portable’ model. It has a treble, a volume, and a speed dial ( 33-45 and 78). I plug it in and turn the treble dial and it hums but doesn’t start spinning. is there a button, or something i do with the needle? the needle doesn’t move on it’s own.

check the drive belt, and the safety screws, which you use to lock the turntable down to avoid damage…..
undo the ‘cir-clip’ and look under the platter
not forgetting you can get a new bush mtt1, which has won many awards, (what hifi 5*) from Argos for about £50….

Check the band that makes it turn, maybe dislodged or broken

Check under the turntable and see if the drive belt has come loose or snapped you should be able to pick one up easily from any curries shop

Try pulling the arm back away from the record, that should make the turntable go round.

Also to make it stop lift the arm off the record and push towards the middle.

Gosh I feel old now! Memories……………………………

I had a similar problem. It was my Mother’s old record player. The repairman said it would cost more to fix it than to purchase a new one for less than $100, so I just trashed the unit.

if the belt is on and it doesnt work then its the motor I’m afraid
worn out worn out motors are normally caused by having the turntable activated and the stylus arm locked down so the table immobile but still swiched on a new motor is needed

Where on earth can you buy a turntable for £100; even the cheap and nasty ones are £500 +

Try lifting the arm and swinging it up and back.
