would a monaural portable record player sound a lot different from a stereophonic one?

I found one that looks nice. Are most vintage portable turntables monaural? thanks very much

If it’s recorded in mono, it will sound the same in mono, even if played on stereo equipment. Stereo material, however, will sound distinctly diferent. Stereo consists of a phase relationship between the ears that gives depth (direction) to sound. Combining that depth into a single channel removes any spatial relationship.

Original vinyl discs were mono, in which a stylus (needle) would travel in a groove that consisted of bumps along the bottom that translated into frequency. When stereo came out, in order to remain compatible with mono, they added bumps to one side of the groove for the second channel’s information. A mono stylus is still only going to pick up the bottom of the groove, (mostly) ignoring the side information. A small amount of cross-talk will be present, so it’s not an entire loss, but still significant.

Most (but by no means ALL) portable turntables were mono, since they were more for convenience than fidelity. There were larger "portable" systems that were stereo, usually with detachable speakers, which became available in the mid- to late-60s. By the 1970’s, stereo fidelity was a much higher priority than portability and so few portables products were made. By that time, portability was served by the 8-track tape, smaller and not subject to vibration for the most part.

The Astrosonic model would be made in the 1970’s, not 50’s or 60’s. The Astrosonic means that the unit is solid state, this was after the tube models that are sometimes worth a few hundred dollars. I’m about to get my first set of turntables and a mixer, but i dont know which type to get. If i get the record turntables i can buy DJ Starscream’s Full Metal Scratch It (Yes, I’ll be scratching to slipknot). But then again, records are really hard to find now.

If i get the cd turntables It’ll be easier to use since cd’s are everywhere. But Full Metal Scratch it doesn’t come in cd form. (atleast i think it doesn’t)

Can someone please help me decide???????

yea, they are almost the same thing.

A turntable is a higher end record player. It usually has a replaceable stylus and cartridge, it usually has a pitch control. They can be belt drive on the low end and direct drive on the high end.

A record player is very low tech. It plays records, usually has an internal amp and speakers, can be portable.

Its a 1984 pilot record player. Part of a entertainment tower. I love it to death but I can’t find anything about pilot radio parts. I can take pictures it it will help

Years ago when I needed a new needle, I took my broken one in to Radio Shack. They had a catalog filled with hundreds (thousands?) of needle pictures, and we were able to pick a replacement by aligning the broken one with the photo of it on the page. The replacement belonged to a different manufacturer, though it fit my cartridge perfectly. Good luck!

How do I amplify the sound of my old record player?

I have a very old record player, but when hooked up to my system, I have to have it on maximum volume just in order to hear it. It has a standard R and L speaker output. Is there a way to amplify the sound so I can really experience my record collection?? PLEASE HELP!!

Basically, a Record Deck does not produce the same level signal as a CD deck or any similar modern device eg. MP3 player, minidisc, DVD etc.
So, the signal needs a miniature amplifier before the main amp, called a pre-amplifier.

I think my girlfriend might have been….she said she went and got vaccinated for the swine flu.

Is it possible? Is it safe to vaccinate someone with a phonograph needle? Is this some of that new age crap?

Not new age, just a very old corny saying.
If someone had a reputation for talking a lot, you would say "they must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle".
Another joke was to say "I have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle and now there’s nothing wrong with my speech-my speech-my speech," imitating a cracked record.
A record was the medium old farts used to listed to their music on, before cassettes, CDs, MP3s and whatever comes next.
Now I feel very old and have to lie down for a while.

how to replace the magnet on the platter of a technics turntable.

this is a video showing ho how to replace the magnet on the bottom of the platter on a technics
turntable. this is easy however finding a brand new replacement magnet… not so easy.

all is not lost though if the reason you would like to change the magnet is because of a chip
if the chip is only small you should be able to get away with cleaning it and blunting the edges of the chip,
the video will explain…

information.

the sand paper i use in the video is actually 320 grit paper that probably all you will need.

when you clean the magnet use a soft cloth or some stiff tissues NEVER use any liquid or spray cleaners.

warnings.

when sanding the chip don’t be too aggressive with the sanding you are not looking to get rid of the chip or sand it flat you are just looking to take the sharp edge off the clip so it doesn’t grind.
