RCA linear tracking turntable with infrared track detection

This 1987 RCA Dimensia MTT230 linear tracking turntable uses an infrared LED and detector on the tonearm to scan the record and find the tracks, allowing it to automatically skip back and forth between the tracks just like a CD player. The track detection works pretty well, even on dirty LPs. Similar models were made by BSR and Carrera.

Pearl Jam Vinyl Record on my home made turntable – DIY – Record Player

This is a video of my newly completed home made turntable. I am totally new to making turntables in fact I never really knew how they worked until a couple of months back. I made one before that was really just for practise. This is my final. You can see next to it the first stages of another I am creating. The plinth (base) is actually a bamboo bread board I got from the hardware store that happened to be exactly the right size. This one is called “The Hybrid” as it is a combination of a pioneer tonearm, Marantz motor and platter and onkyo headshell. Sorry if the vid is a bit shaky. I did it on my iphone.

“(No Power) Chopstick Turntable” (video demo shot at home, April 7/08). This device was premiered in a “no electricity allowed” live performance at Somewhere There, Toronto during Earth Hour, Mar. 29/08 (participants included Arnd Jurgensen, Michelangelo Iaffaldano, Alan Bloor, William Davison).

Record player/ turntable reccomendations?

I want to purchase a device to play 7" and 12" vinyls, and have been looking at different brands. I would hope to find a cheap one, preferably less that £60 – which I know doesn’t make it too great a quality, but I’m not too bothered. I’ve found a record player which also does radio, CD and tape, which I like.

Anything in that price range will be a toy that will wear out your vinyl rapidly.

Playing vinyl is an inherently destructive process, but this destruction can be barely noticeable with a good turntable, and dramatic with a cheap player. The price you are talking about is less than what a radio station would pay for a new needle when vinyl was king.

How does a record player/turntable hook up to speakers?

I want to get into lps but I don’t know anything about turn tables.

I’m thinking about getting an old used turntable on craigslist. But to hear the music I need to hook it up to speakers do most receivers have phono inputs? What connectors to most old turntables have?

Older turntables tend to have either RCA out or DIN socket outputs. Depending on whether the turntable has an internal preamp or not you plug it into the magnetic cartridge input or the AUX input of your receiver/ amplifier. You could always get a USB turntable and use it through your computer which would allow you to rip your LPs to MP3 files as well as play them.

Goldring Lenco GL75 Record Player Plays My Sweet Lord (Live)

I have today unearthed a compilation CD I made for some friends in about 2003 entitled, “Mark’s Favourite Vinyl”. I used my old Goldring Lenco GL-75 turntable/Goldring 1012GX Cart, which I bought second hand. It was an absolute beauty, and it is a shame I sold it a few years ago to go towards buying the P5.

The recording you hear is uploaded in honour of the recent 2010 remaster of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass LP. It’s the Live version of My Sweet Lord, as played at the Concert For Bangladesh, and recorded on the triple vinyl box set. This is an outstanding version, made even better by the way the GL75/1012GX capture the atmosphere of the event. It goes to show that spending a relatively small amount wisely can have tremendous results. If you can get a good, serviced GL75 then do so. It will more than reward the outlay.

I made the compilation on a PC – I think I may have used Cakewalk Home Studio recording software. It was all very hit and miss, and I probably didn’t do as good a job as I could do today with the Mac running Logic. Nevertheless I haven’t tampered with the sound in anyway, except to use my Sav-A-Disc to clean the original compilation CD and upload it to iTunes.

My LEGO Record Player (v2.0)

Presenting the new, improved version of my LEGO record player with a sturdier, less wobbly platter. Note that the pink platter is NOT a LEGO piece; it is actually a giant gear taken from my old “The Gear Box” (which is an entirely different platform than LEGO) by Exclusive Educational Products of Barrie, Ontario. It solved the wobbly platter problem by making the structure less cluttered and more sturdy. Just needed to do a little more tweaking to get it to work with the LEGO system. The two holes in the middle of the giant gear are a tight fit for the LEGO pegs, which made the platter much more solid in the long run!
